With Earth Day this weekend, have you ever wondered how green New York State is compared the rest of the country?

In the past year, the U.S. has seen many devastating natural disasters. Experts believe the high number of hurricanes are due to unusually warm Atlantic waters.

That being said, it is possible that living more sustainably and using greener energy sources could prevent us from having quite as bad hurricane seasons in the future, according to Wallethub.

The analysts at Wallethub,  compared each of the 50 states on 23 key metrics, including LEED-certified buildings per capita to share of energy consumption from renewable resources.

New York was ranked as the 4th greenest state. Here's the breakdown:

Greenness of New York:

  • 16th - Air Quality
  • 7th Soil Quality
  • 19th Water Quality
  • 26th - LEED-Certified Buildings per Capita
  • 19th - % of Renewable Energy Consumption
  • 1st - Energy Consumption per capita
  • 1st - Gasoline Consumption (in Gallons) per Capita
