Independent Living Incorporated, a Hudson Valley nonprofit that has been breaking down barriers for disabled individuals is celebrating its 35th anniversary in style.

On October 1st, Independent Living Incorporated will be hosting a gala celebrating its 35th Anniversary at the Silk Factory, Newburgh's hottest new venue. The evening will include honoring community leaders who continuously advocate for disability rights, delicious food, live music, an amazing auction, dancing, and a few surprises as well.

We spoke with Doug Hovey, President & CEO of Independent Living Incorporated, about the impact the organization has had on the Hudson Valley over the past three and a half decades. Hovey explained that the nonprofit organization is a consumer-directed, cross-disability advocacy and service organization, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities while helping to break down barriers in the community.

The organization is operated by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. A wide range of programs and services are made available for persons with disabilities living in Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam, Sullivan, Rockland, and Westchester Counties.

The gala will celebrate the organization’s contribution to create a barrier-free society with opportunities for thousands of people in the Hudson Valley to achieve their maximum potential. A tribute honoring four individuals whose leadership and exceptional commitment have made a remarkable difference to needs of all people with disabilities include: Legislative Leadership - Senator James Skoufis New York Senate District 39; Behavioral Health Leadership - Richard Tuten, President, and CEO of Coordinated Behavioral Health; Fair Pay for Homecare Rising Grass Roots Advocacy Leadership - Homecare Advocates Alana Berger and Kendra Scalia.

Entertainment includes music by The Funk Junkies, a 13-piece band that is certain to get everyone out on the dance floor. After working up an appetite, guests will be treated to an incredible variety of food provided by Vesuvio's Ristorante. There will also be a silent auction.

The 35th Anniversary Gala will take place at the Silk Factory on Washington Street in Newburgh on October 1st from 5:30pm to 10pm. Safe and secure parking is available to all that attend.
