Is this bride-to-be being a jerk to her future mother-in-law?

One thing I think we can all agree on is that when it comes to planning a wedding, things can get really stressful and really expensive. Then when you add some future family drama, things can get really bad.

That's exactly what's happening to a bride that is getting married this summer in Poughkeepsie. Her decision to cut out the popular parent dances from her reception has caused a big rift between her, her future husband, and her future mother-in-law. Here's what she texted us:

"Happy New Year guys!! I'm hoping that you might be able to help me with some of my wedding drama. I'll be getting married in June and I've decided that I do not want to do the dances with the parents. Any wedding I've been to those dances always seems so awkward, and it takes up a lot of time. My dad is fine with it and doesn't want the spotlight on him, but my future mother-in-law is not happy. When I told her my decision not to do the dances she said this is HER moment with her son. A moment she has always waited for, and I am being a jerk for taking that away from her. I don't see the problem, and it's not like she can't dance with him at all, I just don't want the individual dances. Neither of our parents has given us any money towards our wedding, so it's not up to them. My fiance doesn't care about the dance, he's just upset I made his mom upset."

I've been a part of many receptions across the Hudson Valley over the years and our bride-to-be does have a point. The parent dances do take a little bit of time at receptions and YES sometimes they can be a little awkward BUT if it's that important to her future mother-in-law, maybe she can meet her halfway?

Instead of not doing anything, maybe have the DJ or band play a special song for them and only play half of the song. Or they can always make an announcement that a certain song is a special one for the mom and son and while they dance they can invite everyone to join in so it's not quite as awkward. Just a couple of ideas.
