The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal one-car crash that occurred in Rhinebeck Saturday night.

Christopher T. Watkins, 30, of Dover Plains was identified as the drive of the car involved in the crash, according to a press release issued by the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office. Authorities responded to a report of a crash on Slate Quarry Road in Rhinebeck.

Once on the scene, sheriff's officers observed a Honda off the roadway with Watkins inside. An initial investigation revealed the car was traveling eastbound when the driver lost control and crossed over into the westbound lane of travel.

The car went off the road and struck a fence and pole before coming to a stop, according to the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office. Watkins was transported to Mid Hudson Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

According to a press release, at this time it appears that failure to keep right seems to be the primary cause of the crash. The investigation is still ongoing.
