A 45-year-old Orange County man lost his life in Sullivan County after he crashed his ATV.

On Sunday around 8:50 p.m., New York State Police from the Liberty barracks responded to Mongaup Road in the town of Liberty for an ATV crash.

The investigation revealed that 45-year-old Richard J. Dempwolf from Maybrook was operating a 2005 Honda ATV. While heading west on Mongaup Road he lost control for an unknown reason, left the roadway and struck a tree, police say.

A couple driving by the area called 911 after they noticed the damaged ATV and the injured operator. Hurleyville Fire Department were first on scene and informed the troopers that the operator appeared to have died on impact, police say.

Dempwolf was pronounced deceased at the scene.
