'Tis the season for holiday scams, and this one is terrifying. If you see a crisp $100 bill on your windshield it's not the kindness of a stranger, it's something much worse.

Police departments in several states are warning about the newest criminal ploy. Carjackers have been planting $100 bills under the windshield wipers of cars, not as a holiday gesture, but as a way to get you out of your car. The scam works well because most shoppers return to their cars with loads of packages and usually don't notice the $100 bill until their engine is already running. With the key in the ignition, the unsuspecting victim gets out of the car to claim the $100 bill, leaving their door open and giving a carjacker the perfect opportunity to attack.

WJLA.com reports that Maryland's assistant attorney general has been warning shoppers about the scam, saying "We don’t want to scare people, but we do want you to be careful."
