A number of cops and firefighters from the Hudson Valley are expected to lose their jobs just before the holidays.

The City of Newburgh City Council will meet on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m., along with a host of topics the council will vote on the 2020 budget. If passed 14 firefighters and 19 cops from Newburgh will be laid off, according to the City of Newburgh Firefighters IAFF Local 589.

The council meeting was originally scheduled for Monday, Nov. 25 but was rescheduled to Thursday and moved to new venue to handle an expected larger than normal crowd.

"To better accommodate the number of people expected to attend, the rescheduled Regular Council Meeting is relocated to the Activity Center – 401 Washington Street, Newburgh," governmental officials posted on the City of Newburgh webiste. "Live stream will not be available for the Thursday, November 21, 2019 Regular Council Meeting at the Activity Center. The meeting will be video recorded and archived on the City of Newburgh’s website."

The Newburgh firefighters union is asking for support from any available off-duty firefighter to arrive at the Activity Center at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday to "picket in protest."

A spokesperson from the City of Newburgh wasn't able to comment but confirmed a vote is happening Thursday night. Another spokesperson said comments might be available later today. We will update this story if more information is available.
