According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, New York's health and environmental commissioners have rejected the prospect for hydraulic fracturing (or fracking) in the state. A number of factors, including health risks, local bans and limited land lead to the decision. According to the Pok Journal 

Fracking is the process in which large volumes of chemical-laced water is blasted into underground shale formations, fracturing the rock and releasing natural gas.
