New York State Ranks High For Young Adults Living at Home
Well, you could file this under: Duh!
With the very high cost of living, it shouldn't come as a surprise that New York has the third highest percentage of young adults (ages 18 to 34) living at home with their parents.
In fact, the Tri-State area has the most millennials living with mom and dad, with New Jersey finishing first overall, and Connecticut second.
According to the newest data from the United States Census Bureau's American Community Survey, New Jersey has nearly half of it's young adults still home.
Naturally the high cost of living across the northeast is a big factor, but also slow economic recovery after the last recession is certainly to blame as well.
Other factors include - higher student debts, and lack of affordable rental housing.
Sadly, there just aren't a lot of jobs that pay well out there for young people graduating from college.
Another consideration is that parents nowadays are perhaps more generous with their kids.
This seems to be coming more and more a national trend. According to the Pew Research Center, more young adults in the U.S. are living with their parents than with spouses, partners, or on their own. This is the first time in 130 years that this has happened.
Which state had the lowest? North Dakota.
