Will Hudson Valley Utilities Shut Off Your Power for Non-payment?
Have the bills just being getting ridiculous? Everything has been getting more expensive and your salary has just not been able to keep up? Are you behind in your bills, to the point that you are just trying to pay everyone a little each month?
Has it gotten to the point, where you are just not able to keep up? Winter is coming, can the electric company turn your power off if you just are not able to pay the whole bill? When can they legally turn your power off? Does it depend on what New York State says, or is it determined by the utility co?
Here is what Central Hudson has to say about shutting off your power:
From Central Hudson's website:
If we (Central Hudson) disconnect your service for non-payment, we will do so between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Service will be reconnected within 24 hours, when possible, after payment terms are met. These include payment of the amount due; receipt of the down payment on a payment agreement; if your health or safety is threatened; or a payment is guaranteed by a social services agency.
We will not disconnect heat-related service between Nov. 1 and April 15 without first trying to contact you or an adult member of your household. If loss of service poses a serious health or safety problem, we will continue service for at least 15 days and try to arrange a payment plan. The customer is still responsible for bills and should make reasonable efforts to pay for service.
Here is what NYSEG has to say about shutting off a customers power:
From the NYSEG website (PDF):
NYSEG may terminate service only between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday. We will not terminate service on a day when our offices or the PSC offices are closed, or on the day before a public holiday, on a holiday, or during the two-week period that includes Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Have you ever had your power or your water turned off? Was the utility company willing to work with you to get your services turned back on? How quickly was it turned back on?
