New York Makes Historic Change to Liquor Laws After 100 Years

When was the last time you tried to buy a bottle of wine or a bottle of vodka (rum, tequila or gin, etc.) on a Sunday in the State of New York? If you think that you can just run to the store while you are doing your Sunday morning errands, and head into the liquor store at say 9 or 10 am to grab the bottle that you are going to need for the dinner party that night, you were sad when you went to the store and then remembered that you were restricted to being able to purchase liquor and wine in the State of New York until noon on Sunday, 9 am the rest of the week.

That all changed as of October 14, 2023. Governor Kathy Hochul signed something into legislation that (in the world of the archaic laws of New York State) is pretty progressive. She (along with a few others) made a change to a liquor laws that have been in place since Prohibition in New York, she changed the Sunday hours.

Previously on Sunday, you could purchase in a store, not in a restaurant, beer as of 8 am on as Sunday morning, but for alcohol (hard liquor and wine) you were limited to making purchases between the hours of noon and 9 pm.

When can you now purchase alcohol (hard liquor and wine) on Sunday in NYS?

Because of New York Legislation S.2854/A.7305 wine and liquor stores in New York State (as of October 14, 2023) can expand their store hours on Sunday to open as early as 10 am (if they choose) and stay open up until 10 pm. Again, if they choose. Keep in mind that this is a brand new legislation and that each liquor store in New York State is a small business, and like other businesses across the United States, they are limited to the availability of their employees.
