Survival Instinct: Lost Zebra Spends Night In Hudson Valley Woods

Over the weekend you may have heard that people in Dutchess County were looking for a lost zebra. This was not fake news.

It was a brief outing for one of the three zebras that called a Dutchess County rescue their home. Many people were curious when the post went up on Lost Pets of the Hudson Valley. All the comments were concerned about the zebra making it home but some also mentioned that if they actually saw a zebra they might not believe their eyes.

A Zebra Was Reported Lost in Dutchess County, New York

Either way, the word got out through social media. Much like everyone else I was curious about where a zebra would be living in Dutchess County so I read through the comments and came across 13 Hands Equine Rescue, Inc.

I figured if I was curious you all might be too so I reached out to find out more about the Zebra, how he got out, and how he ended up in Clinton Corners, New York. I had the opportunity to speak with Marylou from 13 Hands Equine Rescue, Inc. who was happy to tell me the story and more about the rescue.

Where Can You See Zebras in the Hudson Valley

13 Hands Equine Rescue, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization located in Clinton Corners, New York housing roughly 200 animals. Its mission is to rescue unwanted abused, and abandoned horses but they have also taken in donkeys, mules, three zebras, and other animals. The goal is to rehab the horses and find them a proper forever home. 13 Hands Equine Rescue also runs an equine therapy program for veterans.

Lost Zebra in Dutchess County New York

So which Zebra went missing? He is one of three male zebras that call 13 Hands their home. The three zebras were rescued together. According to what I was told by Marylou the founder of 13 Hands Equine Rescue they were most likely on their way to a trophy hunting property here in the United States but lucky they ended up with a much happier ending in New York. Yes, sadly trophy hunting happens in the United States

Zebra Spends the Night in the Woods in Clinton Corners, New York

Marylou explained to me how the zebra got lost. Apparently, the zebras became startled and one managed to jump his way out of two enclosures and headed for the woods boarding the property. That is when the search began that went into the night.

They got the word out and made sure to explain that zebras aren't like horses. It was not likely that the zebra would walk up to anyone for help. The zebra was spotted a few times but it had gotten very dark. So the search was called off until daylight.

Fortunately, the bond between the three zebras is tight which may have resulted in a happy reunion in the morning. Marylou and her search crew found the rogue zebra in the morning standing next to the fence where his buddies were waiting for him. They were able to get him back in the enclosure. Fortunately, no harm came to him while he was on a walkabout in Clinton Corners.
