Family Rescued From Floodwaters in Upstate New York

If there's one thing we've learned over the last few days, it's that Mother Nature isn't done with the Hudson Valley just yet.

Relentless rounds of heavy rain have soaked the region, turning quiet streams into fast-moving waterways and leaving many communities dealing with flooding concerns. In parts of Greene County, the rising water became so dangerous that emergency crews had to perform a dramatic water rescue to get a family and their pets to safety.

According to Greene County Sheriff Pete Kusminsky, members of the Sheriff's Dive/Swift Water Rescue Team were called to the Village of Coxsackie after floodwaters quickly surrounded a home.

When they arrived, they teamed up with the Coxsackie Fire Department to carry out the rescue.

Using an inflatable rescue sled designed for swiftwater emergencies, first responders safely reached the home and rescued a woman, her granddaughter, their dog, and even the family's cat before the situation could become more dangerous.

Thankfully, everyone made it out safely.

The rescue is another reminder of just how serious the flooding threat has become after the Hudson Valley was hammered by days of heavy rain. Saturated ground, overflowing creeks, and rapidly rising water have created dangerous conditions across the region, with emergency crews responding to numerous weather-related calls.

It also highlights the incredible work local first responders do when severe weather strikes. Swift water rescues are among the most dangerous calls emergency personnel face, as floodwaters can be unpredictable, powerful, and filled with hidden hazards.

It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep away a vehicle, and walking through floodwater can be just as dangerous because of strong currents, debris, and unseen hazards below the surface.
