How to Get Your Required Boating Certificate in Dutchess County

Soon many Hudson Valley Residents will be out on the Water for another season of boating on the Hudson River. The Dutchess County Sheriff's Department is ready to help you be safe on the water.

Dutchess County Sheriff Kirk A. Imperati announced last week on social media that over the next two months Marine Patrol Deputies will be holding classes and instructing people on New York State Boating Safety. The goal is to ensure boaters are educated on how to be safe and how to lawfully operate a boat in compliance with Brianna's Law.

Boating Certificate Classes are Being Offered this Month in Dutchess County

Brianna's Law was the result of a boarding accident that involved 11-year-old Brianna Lieneck. Brianna was killed in a boating accident in 2005.

Brianna’s Law phases in mandatory completion of a New York State Safe Boating Course for all persons who operate motorized vessels. Failure to comply with this law could result in a fine between $100 and $250. (Dutchess County Sheriff's Office via Facebook)

Anyone planning to operate a boat this year who is born on or before January 1st, 1978 will need a Boating Safety Certificate for this year. Next year all people operating a motorized vessel will need a certificate no matter their age.

In order to get a certificate Attendees must have attended 8 hours of the course to be considered for successful completion. All classes will be held in the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Center Community room at 108 Parker Avenue in Poughkeepsie, New York

Friday, April 12th from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Saturday, April 13th from 8:00 am -12:00 pm

Course 2:

Saturday, April 27th from 8:00 am -5:00 pm

Course 3:

Friday, May 3rd from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Saturday, May 4th from 8:00 am -12:00 pm

Course 4:

Saturday, May 18th from 8:00 am -5:00 pm

Course 5:

Saturday, May 25th from 8:00 am -5:00 pm
