The Newtown home of Adam Lanza, who killed 20 first graders, and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 has been demolished.

The house sat on 2-acres of land, and now it will remain open space. Several neighbors asked that the house be taken down, as it was a constant reminder of the tragedy.

Adam Lanza shot his mother in the home before heading to Sandy Hook, where he carried out the massacre before committing suicide.

Demolition began Monday and was done the same day. The town acquired the house in December, and voted to tear it down a month later, as reported by NBC.

A construction company agreed to demolish the house for free as a way to honor the victims of the shooting. The company's generosity saved the town about $30,000 from an insurance fund set aside for costs associated with the shootings. The fund was used to demolish Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2013.
