The last thing we thought about when remodeling our kitchen was the sink, but what we didn't realize is that the decision is a very important one.

When we bought our home 20 years ago it came with a big, blue porcelain sink. Through the years we thought it served us well, but we really had no other experience with sinks and just assumed that they were all basically the same.

When it came time to remodel our kitchen, we just assumed that we'd get another white, porcelain sink. But when Affordable Granite and Cabinetry showed us a beautiful selection of stainless steel sinks, we were unprepared to make a decision.

That's when we decided to learn about the pros and cons of each type of sink.

As far as porcelain goes, they come in all sorts of colors. Stainless, on the other hand, is just silver. But aside from the aesthetics, there are many practical differences between the two.

While porcelain sinks can be made in different colors, they are much harder to keep clean on a daily basis. Food particles can get stuck, soapy buildup can accumulate and lighter colored sinks can stain very easily. It may take lots of maintenance to get your porcelain sink to stay beautiful with everyday use.

With stainless steel sinks, the only concern is water spots. If not dried, spots can appear on the sink depending on how soft your water is. However, these spots are only temporary, and a quick wipe will return them to their usual shine.

Both sinks can get damaged but in different ways. Stainless sinks can get marks from sharp knives and a very large drop could possibly cause a dent, depending on how thick your sink is. Dropping a heavy pan into a porcelain sink can cause it to chip. And because porcelain is much harder, dropping a soapy glass will usually result in it breaking, unlike a stainless sink which is much more forgiving.

Stainless sinks used to get low marks for being loud, especially when handling a strong spray of water. But today's stainless steel sinks are usually padded, making them equal to porcelain when it comes to quietness.

When deciding on a sink, it's important to weigh the pros and cons. Although we were nervous about the change, we are very happy to have made the switch from porcelain to stainless, and can't imagine going back.
