Widespread Power Outages Expected in Hudson Valley
Extremely strong winds which already caused extensive power outages in New York are heading to the Hudson Valley today, which will likely cause widespread power outages to the area.
The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning for Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan, Westchester, Rockland, Delaware and Green counties until around 7 p.m. Monday.
Twenty to 40 mile per winds with gusts as high as 60 miles per hour are expected, according to the National Weather Service. Hudson Valley Weather's Futurecast show wind gusts in the 40 to 60 miles per hour range across the Hudson Valley.
The potential for strong to damaging winds may blow down large tree limbs, trees and power lines, officials say. Widespread power outages are possible, according to the National Weather Service.
"These winds have the potential to damage trees and cause electric service interruptions," Central Hudson wrote on Facebook.
According to Hudson Valley Weather, on Sunday wind speeds ranging as high as 74 miles per hour was recorded in Western New York on Sunday.
"These wind speeds have as expectedly been accompanied with extensive power outages," Hudson Valley Weather said.
A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
- Make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
- Have an adequate supply of drinking water. If you rely on an electric well pump, fill your bathtub as an added reserve.
- Report fallen wires by calling 911.
- Remember to never use a stove, outdoor grill or any outdoor heating appliance indoors. These actions cause serious, potentially lethal fire and carbon monoxide hazards.
- Only operate generators outdoors, never in your garage, basement or any enclosed space. Generators can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning if not properly ventilated.
- Have flashlights and fresh batteries handy.
