Warning: Poisonous Spiders Found In New York
Poisonous spiders that occasionally enter homes looking for prey have been spotted in New York.
We recently wrote about a cute, fuzzy, yet poisonous caterpillar that has been spotted in New York this year, including all over the Hudson Valley. Well turns out, New Yorkers need to be on the lookout for two poisonous spiders.
According to the DEC, two species of small, pale, yellow spiders, Cheiracanthium mildei and C. inclusum are found in New York and are poisonous to humans. They are often called yellow sac spiders.
“They have necrotic venom that causes itchy or painful ulcerating sores that are slow to heal,” the DEC writes in a Common Spiders of New York brochure. “In New York, bites attributed to brown recluse spiders are almost certainly from yellow sac spiders.”
Sac spiders often light colored spiders with dark fangs and bulging spinnerets.
Sac spiders can’t produce capture webs, so they search in vegetation and sometimes homes looking for prey, the DEC warns.
There are rumors that New York's cellar spiders, which have extremely long delicate legs and hang upside down, are extremely poisonous. However, the DEC says those rumors are just “urban legend.”
