Report: New Yorkers Continue to Get Fatter
Perhaps having all these great restaurants, beer, wine etc in our region comes with a price.
As most of us know, the United States is getter heavier, and that unfortunately includes the state of New York. According to the latest data from the State of Obesity 2018 report, obesity rates in New York have tripled since 1990.
At a rate of 25% , now 1 in 4 people in the state of New York is considered obese. And while this sounds like a lot, New York actually has the seventh lowest obesity rate in the nation.
LoHud says that West Virginia held the highest rate at 38%. According to the figures, most of the states near the top of the list were from the south and midwest. Only Colorado, the District of Columbia, and Hawaii showed up under 25%.
Some counties in the state, however, have shown signs that they're raising awareness and improving things like obesity, and overall health. Some of these counties are even right here in the Hudson Valley.
According to data gathered from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Rockland County ranked number one overall as the state's healthiest area. LoHud says that education, good economy, and quality health care helped drive many of the lower Hudson Valley counties to the top of the list.
