Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley Jr. has announced a coalition of "party patrols" being conducted during graduation season by his deputies, New York State Police, and officers from the Kent, Carmel, Brewster and Cold Springs police departments.

Every town in Putnam County has passed a "Social Host Liability" law that makes it a misdemeanor to "host, suffer, permit, organize or allow a party, gathering or event at his or her place of residence where three or more minors are present and alcoholic beverages are being consumed by any minor."  In simpler terms Sheriff Langley said "it is illegal for anyone to host a party at their home and allow underage drinking to occur."  The crime is punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $3,000 fine.

The "party patrols" conducted by law enforcement will be on the lookout for impaired/intoxicated drivers as well as underage drinking parties at area residences. "High school graduation is a time for celebration, a special occasion not to be marred by tragedy" said Carmel Police Chief Michael Cazzari.
