Orange County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Phone Scam
Sheriff DuBois is warning residents of a phone scam made by individuals claiming to be representatives of the Sheriff's Office Civil Division.
On February 4, 2018 in Cayuga County, N.Y. a resident received a phone call from an individual claiming to be a representative from the Civil Processing Division of the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office.
The caller alleged that a civil fee had been court-ordered and must be paid by a prepaid Visa card from a local drug store to avoid further legal action.
Sheriff DuBois advises all residents to be aware that the Orange County Sheriff's Office does not contact individuals by phone regarding Court-Ordered Judgments, nor will they ask for payment using a prepaid debit/credit card number over the phone.
Disregard any call from someone demanding cash payment and do not give out personal identifying information over the phone.
If you do receive a suspicious phone call that you'd like to report, please contact the Orange County Sheriff's Office by calling 911.
