An ugly bridge in the City of Poughkeepsie is being transformed into a work of art.

The Route 9 underpass on Main Street is not one of the prettiest spots in the city. But that will soon change thanks to Arts Mid-Hudson. Poughkeepsie's arts community has made the bridge their next project in their quest to beautify the city.

Submissions are being accepted for artists who'd like to use the bridge as their own personal canvas. Organizers would like to paint the two aprons directly under Rt. 9 on each side of the underpass, as well as the 12 columns under the bridge.

The Poughkeepsie Arts Commission will be picking five preliminary designs to be presented at a public meeting in August. The final design will be selected by a panel of jurors from the community. After the final design is chosen the artist will sign a contract and get to work on painting the bridge.

If you're a budding artist and are interested in submitting your design, there's still time. An informational meeting will be held on June 21. You can also fill out an online application and receive more information from Arts Mid-Hudson's website.
