The Department of Environmental Conservation reports that hunters in New York took over 200,000 deer in 2016.

The DEC has released the preliminary harvest estimates indicate that hunters in New York  took approximately 214,000 deer in 2016, roughly a 5% increase from 2015.

According to the harvest estimates hunters took an estimated 109,000 adult bucks, a 10% increase from 2015 and 105,000 antlerless deer, a 1.5% increase from 2015.

The numbers are consistent with hunter's reports during the season, and biologists' expectations for the harvest.

The DEC hopes to have the final harvest numbers by the end of the month. the process has been slowed as they are updating their harvest calculation system. The update is expected to speed up analysis for future years, making it more efficient.

Deer and bear reports are available from past years at the DEC website.
