Metallica, Gregg Allman, Rolling Stones Earn Grammy Nominations
The nominees for the 60th annual Grammy Awards have been announced, and Metallica and Gregg Allman lead the classic rock pack with two nominations each.
The Rolling Stones, Roger Waters, Bruce Springsteen, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Yusef / Cat Stevens and the Grateful Dead are also up for awards in various categories.
Metallica's Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct was nominated for best album, and one of its most impressive tracks, "Atlas, Rise!" is in the running for Best Rock Song. This marks the 22nd and 23rd nominations for the group, who have clearly rebounded from that whole Jethro Tull incident.
Allman's farewell album, Southern Blood, has been nominated in the Best Americana Album category, with "My Only True Friend" eligible for Best Americana Roots Song. Tedeschi Trucks Band, Allman's former bandmate Derek Trucks's current group, is nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Album for Live From the Fox Oakland.
The Stones' lively, cover-filled return to their roots, Blue & Lonesome, has been rewarded with a Best Traditional Blues Album nod – their 12th overall. Meanwhile, Springsteen could win his 21st Grammy (out of 50 nominations) for the Spoken Word album version of his autobiography Born to Run.
Yusef / Stevens' The Laughing Apple is up for Best Folk Album, the acclaimed Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip is nominated for Best Movie, and in the least shocking development ever, Roger Waters' Is The Life We Really Want? could take home the Best Engineered Album in the non-classical category.
The 60th annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast via CBS on Sunday, January 28.
