Kayaker Rescued In Hudson Valley
First responders saved a Hudson Valley man who capsized while kayaking in the Hudson River.
On Saturday around 7 p.m., Ulster County 911 received a call about a missing kayaker from the Glasco Mini Park in Saugerties.
The kayaker, 20-year-old Tyler Brinkhuis of Glasco, went kayaking around 4:30 p.m. and wasn’t back by 6:30 p.m., the time he was scheduled to return.
The Glasco fire department and the Ulster Hose Fire Department were dispatched with their marine units. About 30 minutes later, Brinkhuis was found in the water.
He told first responders that the river suddenly became rough and his kayak capsized. He said he was in the water for over an hour, using his submerged kayak to stay afloat.
First responders safely brought Brinkhuis back to shore where he was evaluated and released by ambulance members.
The Saugerties Police department was assisted by the Glasco Fire Department, the Ulster Hose Fire department, Diaz ambulance, the New York State Police and the Ulster County Sheriffs department.
