Some of punk rock’s most legendary musicians gathered on March 4 to launch the new Epix series, Punk. During the panel, Sex Pistols vocalist Johnny Rotten verbally sparred with both Ramones drummer Marky Ramone and Black Flag / Rollins Band frontman Henry Rollins, insulting both musicians during a tense debate on artistic merit.

Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) was in rare form, tearfully mourning the Prodigy’s Keith Flint just prior to the event and launching into tirades throughout the panel. “Henry, we ain’t never met before, have we?” Lydon said. “You’ve said silly things but excellently good things, too.”

Rollins responded, “And you called Black Flag a bunch of suburban rich kids and we wanted to tear your ears off.”

“Yes, I did, but I didn’t like the fucking music,” Lydon came back. “It was boring.”

Rollins didn’t let Johnny Rotten’s barbs fluster him, but Marky Ramone got heated with the Sex Pistol. After Lydon interrupted Marky a number of times, the drummer attacked with, “If it wasn’t for the Ramones, you’d be nowhere. You’d be fuckin’ doing fish and chips somewhere.”

“He’s not even an original Ramone,” fired back Lydon, before Marky accused Lydon of stealing Richard Hell’s image. “And Sid Vicious was the star,” Ramone added.

“That’s right, he was,” Lydon replied. “He was the star for asshole fake idiots like you. Enjoy your drugs and fuckin’ have a happy death … Punk music for me was positive, proof positive, that we could change our lives by music, meaning what we said, attack the political systems. This daft cunt is into fucking drugs. You tattooed twat, you look like a heavy-metal fucking reject.”

Check out a clip of the conversation above and head over to Rolling Stone for the full panel. The three-part Punk series will premiere March 11 on Epix.
