Last September, I stumbled across a story from the Farmer's Almanac that claimed September weather could predict the first snowfall and even how crops could grow the following year.

I am fascinated by these types of claims. They have to be based on facts from somewhere in history. I find it fun to learn about these types of predictions and then see if they come true.

Can September Weather Predict the Upcoming Winter

One of the September weather predictions I wanted to track again this year was the idea that the timing of a September Thunderstorm could predict the first snowfall. Now before you say, What? Turns out this could be true.

One of the Weather Lores that the Farmer's Almanac shared was that the first snowfall would be six weeks after the last thunderstorm in September. I was hoping that some of the rain that was predicted this week would come in the form of a thunderstorm so I could test the theory again.

Farmer's Almanac List of September Weather Lore

Last year our first snowstorm did follow our last Hudson Valley Thunderstorm by six weeks. I couldn't believe it. The Farmer's Almanac has a list of weather lore that September can predict. Such as whatever the weather is on September 6th so it will be for the next 4 weeks.

So what was the weather on September 6th? Looking back it was sunny and temps were hovering around 80 the overnight was 46. I would say not much has changed in our weather since the 6th. The weather has been pretty consistent. Let's see if we can get it to go for another week.

Other things we can keep an eye on to see if these lores are true: As September, so is the coming March; No rain on September 14th means no rain for six weeks. One down 5 to go and one of my favorites is if it is clear on the 22nd the winter will have heavy winds.
