Once again if you are traveling on the New York State Thruway this weekend you will experience construction and a road closure. A project started last weekend will be finished starting on Saturday night.

Earlier this week the NYS Thruway Authority released information and pictures from the demolition of the Northbound side of the Brookside Road overpass. This weekend they will be taking down the southbound side.

Part of the New York State Thruway I-87 Will Be Closed on Saturday

Just like when the NYS Thruway Authority worked on the northbound lanes it will require them to close a portion of I-87. Motorists traveling south on the NY State Thruway I-87 can expect to be routed off I-87 and on to a detour starting at 8 PM on Saturday.

The NYS State Thruway will be closed to southbound traffic between Exit 18 in New Paltz and Exit 17 in Newburgh. The crews will be working to take down the southbound side of the Brookside Road overpass.

This work is expected to last 12 hours. While the work is underway the northbound lanes will remain open but the left lane northbound will be closed while crews are working in the southbound lanes.

Driver Will Be Detoured off NYS Thruway in New Paltz on Saturday Night

The same detour has been set up to redirect traffic. Southbound drivers will exit I-87 in New Paltz and be directed East on Route 299. That will lead them to State Route 9W where drivers will then go south to Newburgh, New York where they can pick up 84 West which will lead back to the NYS Thruway. The drivers will be able to get on the NYS Thruway in Newburgh and continue south.

Once this work is done there should be no further closures in that area. However, the community is hoping for the overpass to be reconstructed. Brookside Road is a popular local route for people in Ulster and Orange County. There has been no word yet about when the road might go back up.
