A serious bicycle accident in Saugerties, NY leads to a Kingston man being airlifted to a hospital.

If you've ever taken a ride on a bicycle you are well aware that there are numerous things that can go wrong while you pedal away. Depending on the terrain you are riding on, there are many factors that can lead to a serious accident including what apparently happened to a man who was riding his bicycle in Saugerties on Sunday afternoon.

"Severe" Bicycle Accident in Saugerties, NY

An unidentified 35-year-old Kingston man was reportedly riding his bicycle on Partition Street in Saugerties on Sunday when he lost control and crashed according to the Daily Freeman.

Saugerties Interim Police Chief Lou Barbaria told the Freeman that the man was riding down the steep hill on Partition Street around 4 p.m. when he lost control and fell off the bike. The man reportedly crashed where the road sharply turned to cross over the red steel bridge that runs over top of the Espous Creek.

If you've never been in the area of the crash it's a fairly steep hill leading to the bridge. Chief Barbaria told the Freeman "It's a steep hill going down. You have to be careful." It's also a good time to remind bicycle riders that you should never ride without wearing some sort of head protection, it could save your life.

Police Investigate

Police investigating the crash believe that the man, who wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the crash possibly lost his footing on some loose gravel on the road. Saugerties officers who responded to the scene of the crash determined that the man's injuries seemed severe enough to have him airlifted to Albany Medical Center to receive treatment and as of Monday, he was in stable condition.
