The Egg in Albany Revokes Decades Long Theatre Policy
The Egg in Albany is an entertainment staple of New York. The hard-to-miss, iconic concert venue in Albany has been been pumping out amazing shows one after another since its doors opened in 1978. I've been lucky to see some shows at The Egg; my favorite has probably been Amos Lee in early 2022. You can even win tickets to see Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues perform this Thursday, October 12th at The Egg through our sister station, WPDH.
Should you be able to make that upcoming show, or any other show in the future, you will be able to do something brand new that hasn't been allowed at The Egg since its opening in 1978!
The Egg Revokes Decades Long Rule
Starting this week, audiences in the Hart Theatre and Swyer Thatre at The Egg in Albany will be able to bring concession beverages into performances. For years, you could buy drinks at The Egg, but you always had to finish them or throw them out before entering the performance hall. Well, not anymore.
The Egg's new Executive Director, Diane Eber, has instituted a policy allowing concession beverages into the theatres in order to "improve the vibe." This is the first time The Egg has allowed this since 1978. The Egg was the last major local performance to prohibit them. The new rule starts with the concert by former Genesis guitarist, Steve Hacket, tomorrow night.
Eber said she consulted with the custodial staff and post-show clean-up crews and had concluded that allowing beverages likely would not add significantly to the effort. All beverages sold at The Egg are sold in single-serve, non-glass containers. Troy-based Old Daley Catering, who handles The Egg's concessions, was thrilled by the new rule, which will increase revenue for their business. For those wondering if food will be allowed in the theatres, the answer is still no.

Eber's beverage policy is just one of many new changes that she is looking to implement in the coming months. Other changes will include initiatives in programming, decor, exhibits and other strategies aimed at bringing "The Egg to its community" according to the venue's announcement of the policy.
