The New York Town That Gave the World ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas
Everyone knows the iconic holiday poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” but what many don’t realize is that its roots trace back to right here in Upstate New York. The city of Troy, just outside of Albany, proudly holds a piece of Christmas history that shaped how the world imagines Santa Claus.
How Upstate New York Became the Birthplace of a Christmas Classic
According to Troy’s city historian, Kathryn Sheehan, the famous poem, originally titled “A Visit From Saint Nicholas,” was first published in the Troy Sentinel newspaper on December 23, 1823. Written by Clement Clarke Moore, it appeared anonymously, describing in vivid detail the excitement of Christmas Eve and the magic of Santa’s visit.
Our First Look at Santa and His Reindeer
That original publication didn’t just introduce the poem, it gave us some of the most loved parts of the Santa story we still cherish today. For the very first time, readers saw the names of the reindeer, and it’s believed the paper also featured the earliest published image of Santa Claus as we know him, jolly, round, and full of cheer.

Upstate New York's Lasting Pride in Its Christmas Legacy
Sheehan told WRGB that Troy takes tremendous pride in its connection to this holiday treasure. “We have something that has been published literally internationally, around the world,” she said. “And to know that it was first spread to the world from Troy is really exciting for us.” It’s a legacy the city celebrates every December as families revisit the poem that started it all.
A Poem That Outshines the Rest
“’Twas the Night Before Christmas” has become one of the most loved works in the English language, so much so that it’s often said to surpass even Shakespeare in global recognition. Its verses have shaped Christmas traditions for generations, reminding us all of the childlike wonder that comes alive each year.
From the White House to the World
To mark the poem’s 200th anniversary, it was featured in the White House Christmas display, thanks to a collaboration with the Library of Congress. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden honored the milestone, calling it “a poem etched so deeply into so many of our childhood memories.” Various editions were showcased in a special display, paying tribute to the story that continues to bring joy to families everywhere.

A Timeless Reminder of Christmas Magic
Two centuries later, the poem that began in a small Upstate New York town still captures hearts around the world. “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” remains more than just a poem, it’s a symbol of the magic, innocence, and togetherness that make the season so special.
