A Hudson Valley man has quite a fish story to tell after catching a record smallmouth Bass during a recent fishing tournament.

The DEC has confirmed that the 8 lb. 4 oz. smallmouth bass that was caught from the St. Lawrence River on August 28 ties the state record set by Andrew Kartesz back in 1995.

New York State DEC Commissioner, Basil Seggos announced this week that Patrick Hildenbrand of Germantown caught the impressive fish while he was participating in a fishing tournament in the Thousand Islands Region.

This is just the latest in a few recent records that have been set by Hudson Valley anglers. In 2014 Eric Lester of Goshen caught a 60-pound striped bass in the Hudson River near the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, setting an all-time record. The year before, Richard Otty caught a record-tying white crappie while fishing at Kinderhook Lake in Columbia County.

Of course, it you don't need to have a record-setting catch on the line to get the adrenaline pumping. Earlier this year a couple of fishermen showed us just how much intense catching a "monster fish" in the Hudson River can be, even if it just turns out to be a a 35 inch striped bass.
