Finishing first is usually an accomplishment. In this case not so much. The Hudson Valley placed first and second, out of ten different designated regions, in DWI arrests in a New York State police crackdown.

Enhanced policing on drunk and impaired driving throughout the Labor Day holiday resulted in hundreds of arrests and tens of thousands of tickets issued across New York state.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that State Police arrested 769 people for drunk driving and officers issued 47,359 tickets over a 20 day period. It was all part of the  “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” national campaign. The operation ran from August 21st through September 7th.  During the same period last year, 663 people were arrested for DWI.

During the latest crackdown, the upper Hudson Valley saw the most drunk driving related arrests at 144, followed by 94 throughout the lower Hudson Valley.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports, a STOP-DWI checkpoint led to 8 arrests on the Friday of Labor Day weekend in the Town of Lloyd. Multiple traffic citations were also issued.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” program is aimed at reducing deaths and injuries caused by drunk drivers or drivers impaired by drugs.
