While extensive regulations in the state of New York are posing challenges for medical marijuana, other neighboring states are looking forward to the potential legalization of recreational marijuana.

CBS Albany reports that several proposed 2016 ballot questions that would allow for the recreational use of marijuana in the state of Massachusetts are being filed with the state attorney general's office. Could this mean Massachusetts could be following in the footsteps of Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and the District of Columbia?

The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol said it would submit an initiative petition on Wednesday that would allow adults 21 years of age and older to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and also grow a limited amount of the drug in their homes. It would also allow for the licensing of marijuana retail outlets and cultivation facilities. Another group, Bay State Repeal, said it was submitting three possible versions of a ballot question. All would legalize the "acquisition, possession, consumption and cultivation" of marijuana by adults for personal use, according to CBS Albany.

Wednesday is the deadline for filing proposed questions for the 2016 state ballot.
