FX Updates on ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Creator’s Involvement With Mayan Spinoff
The moment word broke of a potential Sons of Anarchy spinoff focused on the Mayan MC gang, franchise creator Kurt Sutter‘s involvement seemed understandably focused on his new FX drama, The Bastard Executioner. We all know how that turned out as well, but could Sutter return to Sons of Anarchy to leads its spinoff?
Speaking at FX’s TCA press tour over the weekend, network head John Landgraf didn’t think it likely that Sutter would write or showrun the new Mayan-centric spinoff (which doesn’t yet have a pilot order), but rather that Sutter might be “working on an idea for a new show” after The Bastard Executioner.
That said, Landgraf did offer that Sutter was “starting to re-engage with the Sons of Anarchy spinoff” in some form, as well that “he’ll be coming to me soon,” having been consumed with writing after The Bastard Executioner, and ignoring Landgraf’s suggestion to “take time off to rest.”
Last we heard, the spinoff was set in the present day, potentially allowing for occasional crossover with surviving Sons of Anarchy characters, but also exploring the biker subculture through a Spanish point of view. Sutter also mentioned his intent to hire a showrunner fluent in the culture, rather than infuse his own experiences.
It remains to be seen when we’ll hear progress on the proposed Sons of Anarchy spinoff, but could Sutter take a more active role, after The Bastard Executioner? What new project might the writer have taken on for FX?
