Police say alert citizens tipped them off and helped them catch a man who was stealing valuables from a home in Port Jervis.

Friday evening Port Jervis Police Officers responded to a burglary in progress call at a residential dwelling on Lumber Street in the City of Port Jervis. Police say alert citizens told officers that they noticed a male exiting the residence carrying valuables.

Responding officers located and arrested 32-year-old Nguyen Baez of the Bronx for 2nd-degree burglary, a class C felony and petit larceny, a misdemeanor.

Baez is accused of forcibly entering the dwelling while the homeowner was not present and stealing electronics and other valuables from the household.

Baez was arraigned in City of Port Jervis Court and remanded to Orange County Jail in lieu of $15,000. He is due in court on another date.

Police credit the observant and alert citizens for their keen observations and quick reporting of this crime which led to the rapid arrest of Baez.
