A Vietnam veteran whose wounds in wartime left him with permanent disabilities now has a safe, warm home because of the efforts of Rebuilding Together Dutchess County.

The Hudson Valley man, identified as Mr. Tom, lived in the home for 15 years but did not have the ability to repair or maintain the property as they would have liked to. While at an outreach event for veterans, Mr. Tom filled out an application for Rebuilding Together Dutchess County's National Rebuilding Day, an event designed to call attention to the needs of low-income homeowners.

Mr. Tom opted to not ask for much assistance because he believed others had a greater need for the help. When Rebuilding Together Dutchess County inspected the property, they found serious health and safety issues including a dangerous porch, lack of heat in the bedroom, cracks in the foundation and electrical work in need of rewiring. The repairs and improvements made by Rebuilding Together Dutchess County and its team of volunteers not only helped Mr. Tom with his family's existing needs, but made it easier for him to maintain his home, assuring he and his family could stay in it for years to come.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County wants to help other military personnel in need and is currently seeking nominations.
