A man is behind bars without bail, accused of stealing a car from a local Quick Chek.

On Monday around 2:40 p.m., the Town of Ulster Police Department received a stolen vehicle complaint at Quick Chek on Washington Avenue in the Town of Ulster.

A description of the vehicle was provided to other local police departments. Around 5 p.m., deputies from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office stopped the vehicle on State Route 28 in the Town of Ulster.

Police identified 36-year-old David Smith of Kingston as the driver of the stolen vehicle. He was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony.

Smith was taken into custody and later arraigned in the Town of Ulster Court, where he was remanded to the Ulster County Jail without bail. He is due to reappear in the Town of Ulster Court at a later time.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Town of Ulster Police and New York State Police.
