A 63-year-old man was reportedly attacked by a black bear while he was entering his home in Cairo, New York.

An Upstate New York man received the scare of his life on Saturday when he attempted to enter his home and was welcomed by a large black bear.

Black Bear Attacks Man Inside House in Upstate New York

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) it all happened on Saturday night, August 30th, 2025, when a 63-year-old man walked into an entry room of his house and was greeted by a black bear.

NYDEC officers told News 10 that when they arrived on the scene, the black bear was already gone, but the man was found at a nearby neighbor's house with visible injuries.

Bear "Bit or Scratched" the Victim

The victim told officers that the bear was inside his home in an entry room where he stores food and garbage. He told officers that he was unaware of the bear when he walked in and was either “bit or scratched” when the bear attempted to leave, according to WTEN.

The unidentified man was taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. His condition is unknown at this time. When more information is available, we will update this article.

Bear Attacks Are Rare in New York

According to the NYSDEC, bear attacks similar to this are extremely rare in New York, but are possible.

If you ever encounter a bear, the NYDEC recommends that folks follow the common BearWise basics, including never approaching or attempting to feed a bear. If you spot a bear and it presents an immediate risk to public safety or if it's damaging property and won't leave the area, they recommend you call 911.

Residents are also encouraged to remove bird feeders, secure garbage, never leave pet food outside, and always make sure to clean outdoor barbeques.
