An Arlington, Texas man was carving jack-o-lanterns with his 7-year-old daughter for Halloween when a suspected car thief, armed with a knife, broke in to their home. Little did the suspect realize, the father was armed as well.

Arlington Police said the suspect, identified as Buford Boone, stole a car from a nearby gas station on Tuesday evening, crashed it and then ran into a neighborhood to try to elude officers.

Brian Hackney told the local NBC TV affiliate he was carving pumpkins with his daughter when Boone allegedly ran into his home and began going through his wife's purse. Hackney said he confronted the intruder and stabbed him in the back. According to the the Huffington Post, a neighbor called the 911 emergency line while Hackney held down Boone until police arrived.

"I just went into protection mode," Hackney said. "Ladies say 'mama bear,' but it was 'papa bear' here."

The father and daughter were not injured in the incident. Police say Boone was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He has has been charged with car theft and robbery.
