Not one but two Hudson Valley Colleges are among the most hipster schools in America. College Magazine has named both Vassar (#6) and Bard (#5) to their annual top 10 list.

Vassar College is a Poughkeepsie based liberal arts college known for it's visual arts and English programs. Hipsters have flocked to Vassar before they were even called 'hipsters'. Bard College is located in the northern party of Dutchess County in Annandale-on-Hudson. Bard bills itself as a 'place to think'. And if there's one thing hipsters like to do it's think. Bard also gets extra 'hipster points' for being the birthplace of Steely Dan.

Here's a look at the top five hipster colleges in America, for the full list link up with College Magazine.

  1. New York University
  2. Emerson College
  3. Reed College
  4. Oberlin College
  5. Bard College

We turned to Urban Dictionary to tell us exactly what is a hipster?

Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.
