Halloween is this weekend and with that comes many parties and celebrations plus children and families out trick-or-treating. The New York State Police want to make sure that everyone has a safe and fun Halloween.

With that in mind, Hudson Valley News Network is reporting that a statewide STOP-DWI crackdown will begin this Friday, October 30 and end this Sunday, November 1. New York State Police, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and municipal law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force.

The goal of course is to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives, and according to the Hudson Valley News Network, research has shown that high-visibility enforcement can do just that. It can help reduce drunk-driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.

A review of Halloween nights from 2009-13 shows 43 percent of all motor vehicle deaths involved drunk driving. Sobriety checkpoints play a key part in raising awareness about the problem, according to Hudson Valley News Network.

Go and have fun this Halloween, but please, if you're going to drink, have a designated driver or call a cab. Everyone deserves to have a fun and safe Halloween.
