New York State Lost Track of Over 3,200 Parolees

New York State has lost track of thousands of parolees, some of whom are violent sex offenders.

CBS 6 News Albany reports that New York State's Department of Corrections and Community Supervision lost track of 3,275 parolees. There are 3,275 parole absconders in New York State. An absconder is someone convicted of a crime who is supposed to finish their sentence on parole but stopped reporting to their parole officer.

The Director of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Anthony Annucci did not comment to CBS 6 News Albany but his office did say that if there was a known threat to a victim that attempts would be made to notify them. Wayne Spence, a parole officer and President of the New York State Public Employees Federation told CBS 6 News Albany that he believes a loss of parole officers is the cause for the number of absconders. Spence says that one parole officer should be monitoring 20 high-risk parolees but it's typically a 60 to 1 ratio.
