New York seems well on its way to becoming the first state to ban cat declawing.

The NY Daily News reports that a group of veterinarians went to Albany on Tuesday to push for legislation

Manhattan Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal introduced the bill in 2015. Supporters say they are still hopeful it will see a vote before the end of the Legislature’s session in June. Rosenthal's bill would ban all cat declawing, unless in the case of a tumor or other medical emergencies. The Humane Society of the United States, as well as other animal welfare groups, have supported Rosenthal's effort.

Republican Senator Joseph Griffo of Onieda County sponsored the Senate version of the measure.

Detractors include the New York State Veterinary Medical Society, who say the issue should be left to pet owners and their veterinarians. And while the American Veterinary Medical Association has gone on record saying that declawing should be a last resort, they still have not called for a total ban.

One well known supporter for the state ban is actually Black Sabbath bass player Geezer Butler. Butler released a statement through the Humane Society in February, saying that he backed the measure.

Cat declawing is already illegal in England, Austria, Israel, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Norway, Ireland, as well as a number of other countries.
