Upstate New York School Cancels Rest of the Football Season
The rest of this season's football games in one upstate New York school district have been canceled.
This time of year many Hudson Valley schools are lucky enough to have the resources and student-athletes to field a full football team season after season. Some of our school's football programs are so good that in some towns it's the talk of the town. Now it's nothing like some say it is in the south and mid-western parts of the country but New York does love football which is why when a school announces they are canceling the remainder of its season many in the community want to know why.
Coxsackie-Athens School Cancels Homecoming Football Game
It all started back around the beginning of October when the superintendent and the athletics director of the Coxsackie-Athens School District announced that the school was going to have to cancel the school's varsity Homecoming football game, which was scheduled for October 4th, 2024. The school informed parents and the community by saying,
"Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances and injuries, our C-A football team will not be able to dress an adequate number of players to safely compete. As always, the health and safety of our students and staff is the District’s top priority."

The message went on to say that the school was "truly sorry" that they had to cancel the game but did still plan on hosting the school's homecoming celebrations. Thankfully students were able to experience a great night of school spirted fun! Unfortunately, soon after the cancelation, the school announced that they would now be canceling the entire varsity football season.
Football Season Canceled
The school announced that the remainder of the 2024-25 varsity football season was canceled in a letter (below) sent to the community informing everyone that the school didn't have enough eligible players to meet the participation requirements that are set by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The letter said,
"After serious deliberation, the Coxsackie-Athens CSD and athletic department have made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the 2024-25 varsity football season due to the lack of eligible participants not meeting the requirement of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The decision was not made lightly, but the challenges we are facing this year have made it the most responsible course of action for the well being of our student athletes and program."
The letter went on to say that the school appreciates the dedication of the players and the support of their parents. It also said that they will work with student-athletes to keep them engaged in other forms of training and development. The letter closed by saying they are discussing the next steps for its varsity football program.
