Town of Wappinger to Fill Time Capsule Celebrating 150 Years

One Dutchess County town is celebrating a huge milestone and celebrating throughout the year.

The Town of Wappinger in Dutchess County has a deep rooted history that runs back to the 1600s. Thankfully, the town is run by passionate locals like Joey Cavaccini, the Town Supervisor and the Town Historian.

According to Cavaccini, in 1659 Wappinger "became the first settled geographical area in Dutchess County, when Christian settlers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony came here in hopes to seek religious freedom. "

The Town of Wappinger history website is filled with interesting facts about the Dutchess County town as well as stories like John F. Kennedy visited the area in August 1960. JFK landed at what is now Hudson Valley Regional Airport and attended the Dutchess County Police Officers Association clambake later that day.

On the site we also learn that this year the Town of Wappinger is celebrating their 150th birthday.

Many Events Scheduled for 150th Wappinger Celebration

The Town of Wappinger website explains "in 1875, the New York State legislature officially created the “Town of Wappinger”" which makes this year their 150th anniversary.

To celebrate, the town will be hold many events throughout the year including S'more Fest on January 24th at Schlathaus Park and the re-opening of the Town of Wappinger Senior Center.

The Town Of Wappinger Celebrates 150 Years With Time Capsule

They will also be celebrating the milestone with a time capsule that will be set to open in the year 2125.

According to The Town of Wappinger Parks and Recreation above the time capsule will be a court of Wappinger 150 commemorative Bricks. The bricks are on sale now through the Wappinger Recreation website.

So what will be in the Town of Wappinger time capsule? Well, the Town of Wappinger is leaving that up to the community.

Maybe photos of Mesier Park during the holidays or a baseball from Robinson Lane? Currently they are taking suggestions through a survey on their website.
