What You Need to Know About A Hazardous Site In Ulster County
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) is holding a public meeting to invite people to comment on the proposed cleanup of an area now listed as a State Superfund Site in Rosendale, New York.
Superfund Site Clean-Up Planned for Rosendale Cleaners in Rosendale New York
The meeting will be about the property known as Rosendale Cleaners located at 1090-1094 Route 32 in Rosendale, New York. Once listed for sale for almost half a million dollars this 1.93 acre lot with a building has since been taken off the market.
According to a press release from the NYS DEC on Monday, February 3, 2025, at 7 PM, the public is invited to the Rosendale Community Center to hear the clean-up plan and make comments. The NYS DEC is also accepting written comments now through February 21, 2025.
Commercial Land in Ulster County Declared a Superfund Site
According to the information released by the NYS DEC, the site has been listed as a Class "2" site. There is a list referred to as the State Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Sites which is the list of State Superfund Sites.

This type of classification is given to sites considered to be a significant threat to public health or the environment. These sites require action. The NYS DEC will go over those plans at the meeting and are looking for input from the public.
Clean-up at this site will include the excavation of approximately 1,300 tons of contaminated soil which will then be disposed of off-site. They plan to go as deep as 12 feet below the current surface with the removal. (See the complete NYS DEC Plan).
The site is surrounded by other businesses, woodlands, and a residential area. The actual property has no current business on site. It had been used as a commercial site since the mid-1900s according to the NYS DEC paperwork.
There was a dry cleaner on site until it burned down in 1981. After that, a hardware store and diner were on the property until about 2009. Once it is cleaned up it is expected that the property will continue to be commercial.
