If one Hudson Valley village has its way, it could disappear forever. Here's what it means when residents decide to "dissolve".

With so many special areas in the Hudson Valley, it's hard to imagine that any town of village would want to disappear. Judging from their proposed plan, however, there seems to have been many factors that led to the rather significant decision.

What Does It Mean When a Town "Dissolves"?

A "Dissolution Plan" is exactly what it sounds like: a plan to dissolve a current infrastructure that will (in this case) be absorbed by another entity. In February 2024, the village began investigating the possibility to dissolve, and has recently shared a completed proposal.

Why Is Tannersville Voting for Dissolution

"The Board determined that it would be important to evaluate whether there is, or is not, a potential for improved services, and/or reduced taxpayer costs should the Village government dissolve", shared the Village of Tannersville. If the vote is successful, another town will absorb many of the village's former responsibilities.

What Happens if Tannersville Dissolves?

The proposal would shift most of Tannersville's local government responsibilities to the Town of Hunter, including everything from local court cases and public works to water and electricity services. Positions on the board of trustees as well as the village mayor would also be dissolved.

While the picturesque village will be missed if the dissolution is approved, it seems that both Tannersville and Hunter are on board with a decision they say will better serve their residents. The proposed dissolution would go into effect December 31 2025. Check out more Catskill history below.
