What’s the Gigantic Walkway Over the Hudson Net Actually For?
Hudson Valley commuters may have noticed something unusual over Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, NY this week: a giant contraption that looks like a cross between a trampoline and a safety net for trapeze artists.
The net, which is currently installed underneath the world-famous (and record-setting) Walkway Over the Hudson (below) might look odd, but its purpose is very necessary.
What's the Story with the Massive Net Over Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, NY?
Even though the net looks similar to a contraption you might see at the famous trapeze school at Pier 40 in New York City (below), the answer for Hudson Valley's newest roadside oddity is a lot more official.
Safety Precautions Underneath the Walkway Over the Hudson
The net underneath the Walkway Over the Hudson has less to do with acrobatic safety and more to do with worker and commuter safety. According to officials at the Walkway, the span is routinely inspected by the New York State Bridge Authority every two years.
The net, similar to other devices used on high-rise construction projects, is specifically meant to protect passing vehicles from any possible debris or tools that may accidentally fall in the course of the routine inspection. While the net has been installed for over a week, drivers can expect its removal after inspections are finished.
