Spotlight: Even More Affordable Homes Coming to Ulster County

It was a busy week for affordable housing in Ulster County with not one but two major announcements for residents looking for a permanent place to live.

On Friday, November 14th, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Golden Hill Apartments, a brand new development built on the site of the former Ulster County Jail in Kingston, NY (below). On the same day, another event celebrated a second project for affordable housing.

"Friday was an exciting day on the housing front!", began a recent social media post from Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger. " Before cutting the ribbon on the Golden Hill Apartments in Kingston, we gathered in Saugerties for a land dedication ceremony for Hope Springs". Instead of apartments like Golden Hill, however, Hope Springs will be the site of 10 separate homes.

The homes will be built in partnership with Ulster County Habitat for Humanity and sold to families with incomes that are between 50% and 80% of the local median wage. Partial funding will come from Ulster County's Housing Action Fund, a recently-approved initiative proposed by County Executive Metzger:

The Ulster County Housing Action Fund (HAF) supports equitable and sustainable community development through the construction, development, revitalization, and preservation of affordable, workforce, and supportive housing. Investment from the fund [requires] the creation of healthy, energy-efficient, and climate-responsible housing units with an emphasis on housing that serves the county’s most vulnerable populations.
